What Happened?
On the morning of February 19 of the year 1942, Australia was attacked for the first time in history. It was an air raid from the Japanese that started from around 10 am until 40 minutes past ten. The 40 minute attack involved bombs into the water and land. They targeted airfields and the harbour. The second attack lasted for 20-25 minutes and started an hour after the first raid ended. They targeted the same places and hit many neighbouring towns around the harbour.
Overall, the Japanese used 54 land based bombs and 188 aircraft bombs. The two raids killed 243 people and between 300-400 were wounded. 20 military aircrafts were bombed, eight ships were destroyed and many military facilities around Darwin were destroyed as well
